Floor

Subfloor Preparation

Before the floor can be poured a few preparations must be made. First, the subfloor must be brought to the proper level and then compacted. The simplest way to determine this level is to measure down from the door recesses the thickness of the concrete floor, then snap a chalk-line around the inside of the grade beam at this level. This is the grade the sub-floor must be after it has been screeded level and compacted (if radiant tubing will be installed, the thickness of the foamboard must also be accounted for).

Level and compact the sub-floor

Before the floor can be poured the sub-floor, here 5/8ths minus, must be leveled and mechanically compacted to provide a sound base.

Once this is accomplished, a vapor barrier should be installed (6 mil black plastic works well) followed by welded wire mesh or rebar. Regardless of choice of reinforcing steel, ensure it is suspended a few inches above the vapor barrier so it will embed in the middle of the concrete and provide structural integrity to the floor.
