Foundation, p2

Layout and Excavation

Digging the foundation trench.

The foundation is laid out using batter boards, a tape measure, string, and spray paint; then the digging begins.

Once the site is chosen it should be graded level and excavated to provide adequate drainage away from the structure. Next set batter boards and string to establish the interior and exterior lines of the foundation, and transfer these lines to the ground, marking them with spray paint. The material between these lines will be removed for the "trench" of the rubble-trench foundation.

Note: If you will be using a back-hoe to excavate the trenches, set the batter boards back far enough to allow movement of the machine without disturbing them.
