Post and Beam, p3
Setting the Beams
The beams measure 6X8 and are attached to the posts inside and out with metal post caps designed for such use. Where beams meet perpendicularly (i.e., corners) they were either mitered and joined with post caps or bolted together with angle irons. The result was a solid frame to support the roof. Though the structure still lacks any resistance to shear along the wall planes, this will be addressed using wall-brace straps and welded wire mesh once the roof is completed. Until then the temporary wall braces remain in place.
With all of the posts and beams in place, the structure begins to take shape. The log posts will support a timber-framed truss over the front porch.
It is important to secure the posts and beams together as soon as possible after assembly if they are not completely dry. As they dry in the direct sun it is likely some of them will twist. This will not necessarily affect the integrity of the member, but may make framing that much more difficult.
The door and window headers and sills must still be installed using the same post material, and they'll be supported using jack studs cut from dimensional lumber. Next we begin framing the roof!
