Bale Curb
In preparation for the bales, to the bale curbs were added rows of 20 penny (4 inch) galvanized decking nails spaced every 4 inches on alternating sides of the 4X4. These will act as claws, holding the first course of bales firmly in position. The traditional rebar spikes embedded in and rising from the foundation were eliminated, as they are a moisture conduit from the foundation directly into the bales.
Between the bale curbs was placed more rigid foam insulation. Other non moisture-wicking material could have been used here as well, such as gravel, but the material should be capable of supporting the center of the bale.
