Rotating laser level
This tool enabled us to set the initial grade from which to excavate the footings. It also allowed us to level the foundation forms, and mark the posts to the proper beam height; all very important measurements that, if inaccurate, can affect the integrity of the structure. An alternative would have been a water level. Also accurate, though slower and usually requires a second person.Baling needle
This unusual hand tool is a must. Used for both resizing larger bales and stitching welded-wire mesh to the bale walls, it is indispensable. The good news is that for a few dollars and about 20 minutes of labor you can make one yourself. A 36 inch by 5/16's (~ish) zinc-coated rod with a 90 degree bend approximately 6 inches from one end, and a hammered flat and ground smooth point with notches cut into it at the other will do nicely. Passing the needle repeatedly through the straw bales will smooth and polish the tip to an almost mirror finish. If you wish to speed the stitching process, make two needles, one for each person on either side of the wall.
